Rooftop Housing Group reaffirms its commitment to inclusivity and accessibility by completing two purpose-built flats in Gloucester for social rent that are designed to accommodate wheelchair users.
Understanding the diversity of customers and the importance of meeting different needs, Rooftop has recently converted a vacant shop unit on the ground floor of its Walkinshaw Court development to deliver two brand new flats. The flats have been built with aids and adaptations that support individuals with disabilities to live safely and independently in their homes.
The flats are designed to accommodate a household with a wheelchair user and fully wheelchair accessible. They include a kitchen with a hob and a sink in a section of a height-adjustable worktop, an integrated oven at wheelchair-accessible height, and fully wheelchair-accessible wet-room shower rooms. This range of amenities enhances comfort and convenience for our customers.
In addition, the flats have wider doorways, higher plug sockets, lower light switches, and reinforced ceilings capable of supporting ceiling track hoists.
External gates accessing the wheelchair ramp and the communal entrance door are fully automatic opening and can be controlled via a fob and the audio door entry system, enabling our customers to lead fulfilling lives and remain actively engaged in the community.
During the build and handover process, our colleagues closely communicated with the customers to ensure that each property met their unique needs and preferences.
One of our new customers, who moved into her new home in August, told her Occupational Therapist that she and her son are "absolutely delighted with the flat."
The Occupational Therapist said she is especially pleased with her kitchen and having space for a dining table, while her mother has also expressed her satisfaction with the outcome.
The Occupational Therapist added, "I just wanted to express my appreciation for all the joint work with this case. The result is the customer living in accommodation that meets her current needs and will hopefully continue to do so for many years to come."
Rebecca Pitt, Executive Director of Investment at Rooftop, said, "We are here for our customers. We understand their diversity and recognize the importance of delivering homes that meet a variety of different needs."
"These wheelchair-accessible flats provide safe and comfortable homes which will enable individuals with disabilities to live independent lives on their terms."
The successful direct match of one of the flats, facilitated by the Gloucester City Council, is a testament to the collaborative efforts between Rooftop Housing Group and local authorities. This partnership is important in addressing the housing needs of individuals with specific requirements in the area.
