A previously outdated sheltered housing scheme is in the process of receiving a new lease of life as works to redevelop the site continue at pace.
Almonry Close, which is based in the heart of Pershore, had been considered no longer fit-for-purpose and would have become a significant loss for a community which is in need of housing provision – particularly for its retirement population.
Instead, Evesham-based Rooftop Housing Group has taken charge of redeveloping the original 1970s site into 54 modern, retirement living apartments, for rent and shared ownership.
“This redevelopment project demonstrates our commitment to providing good quality homes and reliable landlord services. In transforming Almonry Close into a hub for retirement living, we’re carefully planning and revitalising the area to create a safe, warm and comfortable homes that meet the needs of our customers,” Rebecca Pitt, Executive Director – Investment of Rooftop Housing Group said.
“Together with our partners, Speller Metcalfe, we’re proud to be at the forefront of shaping a sustainable future for our community.
To meet modern living standards the original building – which lacked lifts, communal space and comfortable accommodation units – was demolished in 2023.
The ‘new’ Almonry Close, which faces onto the beautiful Pershore Abbey grounds, will revitalise this disused site. Significant design input from both Wychavon District Council and Historic England will ensure the scheme is as sympathetic as possible to its surroundings.
Worcestershire-based Speller Metcalfe is the main contractor undertaking the works, and has a long-standing history of redeveloping sites into buildings for the benefit of communities.
“Being able to transition a disused site into vital accommodation is part of creating a sustainable community,” said Mark Eaton, divisional director at Speller Metcalfe. “These homes will not only be representative of modern living, they will be built with efficiency in mind, aiming to keep costs to a minimum while maintaining high quality standards for residents.”
Following demolition of the original buildings, the ground level has now been reduced in anticipation of the new building, and storm drain connections have been made to ensure capacity for rainwater run-off.
The next phase of works which begins imminently is the piling for the foundations, to ensure the building structure is appropriately supported.
The project is due to complete Spring 2026, and alongside the apartments will include a large lounge and activities room for resident use.
