More than a home: how supported housing helps our customers thrive

Rooftop is proud to support Supported Housing Week 2026, an opportunity to celebrate the positive difference supported housing makes to people, communities and lives.

As a reliable landlord, we believe a home is a place where people can feel safe, stay connected and live as independently as possible. For customers who need extra support, our retirement and housing with care help create better lives that can make a real difference for older people.

Building stronger communities together

At Rooftop's older people schemes, our officers organise regular catch-ups where customers can socialise, share experiences and support one another.

Terry, who lives in one of our schemes, said:

It's helping to make us a community and not feel alone.

These connections can have a meaningful impact. Recently, after discussing mobility and safety with fellow residents during a coffee morning, two customers chose to switch to more supportive walking aids. As a result, they now feel safer and more confident when moving around their scheme and getting out and about.

Our customers also play an active role in shaping their communities. During a residents' meeting, one customer suggested transforming a regular coffee morning into a gardening session. Residents echoed the idea, rolling up their sleeves to clear planters and prepare them for new flowers, while our officers provided support along the way.

For Phyllis, the social connections provided through supported housing are invaluable.

The retirement living service is very important to me. I really value the conversations we have because I'm unable to get out as much as I would like. Our officer has helped me reconnect with people I knew in the past, and that has brought more meaning to my life.

These everyday moments demonstrate the kind of connected communities we want to create. By bringing people together, we're helping older customers remain active and support one another to live well and independently.

Working together when it matters most

Support can take many forms. When one customer was struggling with rent arrears and finding it difficult to engage with services, our Retirement Living Officer worked closely with their social worker and Rooftop’s income team to find the right solution.

As a result, they secured backdated housing benefit and helped the customer manage their rent and sustain their tenancy.

This is a great example of our commitment to working together and putting customers at the heart of what we do. By building strong partnerships, we can help customers and provide the support that suit their needs.

Through supported housing, we’re helping customers stay independent, feel part of a community and enjoy the security of a home they can truly call their own.
