New homes at Rosamund Close in Coventry are bringing stability and joy to twelve Gypsy, Roma and Traveller (GRT) families. As part of Rooftop Housing Group’s commitment to supporting GRT communities, this new 12-pitch site provides safe, modern and culturally appropriate housing, helping families put down roots and build a secure future.
John, one of the new residents who just moved in, expressed his excitement. “It’s amazing. It’s unreal. There’s lots of space, and everything inside is beautiful. My kids are so happy to be off the side of the road and be settled now as a settled traveller.”
One of the key highlights for John is the additional living space outside the caravans. “The shed is great because you can live in it. You have lots of space, you don’t have to be always stuck in the caravan, and you can do everything altogether – sitting in a living room, bathroom, showers, everything in one place.”
The move is also a dream come true for Charlene, another new resident. “I’m very happy. I’ve been waiting since July, and it’s finally happening.” Charlene is eager to settle in and looks forward to seeing the community thrive.
Rosamund Close, located on Siskin Drive, collaborates significantly with Coventry City Council. Thanks to Homes England and Coventry City Council funding, Rooftop transformed a derelict traveller site into a modern development for GRT communities. Each pitch includes a parking area for two vehicles, a day room with a kitchen, bathroom, and utility space, and a backyard with a shed. A shared play area for children is also part of the development, ensuring a safe and welcoming environment for families.
Boris Worrall, Chief Executive of Rooftop Housing Group, said, “We are deeply committed to supporting the GRT community by providing good-quality, culturally appropriate housing that meets their needs. Rosamund Close is a testament to this commitment, offering families not just a place to live, but a foundation for a secure and stable future.
By working alongside our partners, we aim to create inclusive communities where every family has the opportunity to thrive.”
Mark Eaton, Director at Speller Metcalfe said: "We're delighted to have now handed over the new Rosamund Close development to Rooftop Housing Group. We know this scheme will be well received and a fit for purpose site for the Gypsy, Roma and Traveller community."
Rooftop has a strong history of supporting GRT communities. Other projects include the refurbishment and extension of the caravan site at Houndsfield Lane in Wythall and the development of an 11-pitch site a Gables Close in Solihull. Rooftop also manages seven additional pitches at Gables Close on behalf of Solihull Council. Altogether, Rooftop is responsible for 53 pitches across three sites.
We also provide advice and guidance for other organizations that wish to deliver affordable housing for Gypsies and Travellers.
