Tax Credits are ending

Tax Credits are coming to an end, and most people will need to apply for Universal Credits (UC) instead.

Please note if you are on Tax Credits, including Working and or Child Tax Credits, you may have received or will receive a letter called a Universal Credit Migration Notice from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) explaining what you’ll need to do and by when.

You won’t be moved to UC automatically, so it’s important to act quickly and follow the instructions in the letter. Do not ignore it, otherwise, your benefits will stop. To continue receiving financial support, you will need to claim UC by the deadline stated in your Migration Notice letter, even if you have just renewed your tax credits claim.

If you are claiming tax credits and are of State Pension Age, DWP will write to you to ask you to apply for Universal Credit or Pension Credit, depending on your circumstances.

If you have any question, please contact Citizens Advice Bureau. Their Help to Claim advisers can help you with the early stages of your UC claim. For example, The advisers can help you work out if you can get UC, fill in the application, prepare for your first Jobcentre appointment and check your first payment is correct.

You can also visit this government website Understanding Universal Credit - Home for more information about UC, including eligibility and how to make and manage your claim.
